Karen L. Collins received her BA in mathematics and classics at Smith College in 1981. Her first mathematical paper was joint with Michael Albertson. She received her Ph. D. in mathematics from MIT in 1986. Her thesis advisor was Richard Stanley. Her first job was at the department of mathematics and computer science at Wesleyan University in Middletown CT, where she remains. Her current title is Professor of Mathematics.
