After undergraduate studies in physics at the University of Oxford, I embarked on dual careers in science writing and academic research. Over the last 30 years I have published research in areas ranging from neural computing and celestial mechanics to probability theory and the physics of "Murphy's Law" (for which I won the IgNobel Prize for Physics in 1996).

I am currently a visiting professor in the Dept of Mathematics at Aston University, Birmingham, UK and my current interest is in Bayesian inference.
